چکیده

QSO absorption spectra provide an extremely useful probe of possible cosmological variation in various physical constants. Comparison of H i 21 cm absorption with corresponding molecular (rotational) absorption spectra allows us to constrain variation in y ≡ α2gp where α is the fine structure constant and gp is the proton g-factor. We analyse spectra of two QSOs, PKS1413+135 and TXS 0218+357, and derive values of ∆y/y at absorption redshifts of z = 0.2467 and 0.6847 by simultaneous fitting of the H i 21 cm and molecular lines. We find ∆y/y = (−0.20 ± 0.44) × 10 and ∆y/y = (−0.16 ± 0.54)× 10 respectively, indicating an insignificantly smaller y in the past. We compare our results with other recent constraints from the same two QSOs (Drinkwater et al. 1998; Carilli et al. 2000) and with our recent optical constraints which indicated a smaller α at higher redshifts.

Probing variations in fundamental constants with radio and optical quasar absorption-line observations

Nine quasar absorption spectra at 21-cm and ultraviolet (UV) rest-frame wavelengths are used to estimate possible variations in x ≡αgpμ, where α is the fine structure constant, gp the proton g-factor and μ ≡ me/mp is the electron-to-proton mass ratio. We find 〈 x/x〉 total = (0.63 ± 0.99) × 10−5 over a redshift range 0.23 zabs 2.35 which corresponds to look-back times of 2.7–10.5 billion years. ...

UVES observations of QSO 0000 – 2620 : molecular hydrogen abundance in the damped Ly α system at z abs = 3 . 3901 ?

We have discovered molecular hydrogen in a fourth quasar damped Lyα system (hereafter DLA). The UVES spec-trograph on the 8.2m ESO Kueyen telescope has allowed the detection of H 2 in gas with low metallicity, Z/Z 10 −2 , and high neutral hydrogen column density, N (H i) 2.6 × 10 21 cm −2 , at redshift z abs = 3.3901 toward QSO 0000–2620. The measured H 2 fractional abundance of f (H 2) 4 × 10 ...

New Limits on the Possible Variation of Physical Constants

Recent detections of high-redshift absorption by both atomic hydrogen and molecular gas in the radio spectra of quasars have provided a powerful tool to measure possible temporal and spatial variations of physical ‘constants’ in the Universe. We have compared the frequency of high-redshift Hydrogen 21 cm absorption with that of associated molecular absorption in two quasars to place new (1 sigm...

We have compared the frequency of high-redshift Hydrogen HI 21 cm absorption with that of associated molecular absorption in two quasars to place new (1 sigma) upper limits on any variation in y ≡ gpα 2 (where α is the fine structure constant and gp is the proton g-factor) of ∆y/y < 5 × 10 −6 at redshifts z = 0.25 and z = 0.68.

Measuring Changes in the Fundamental Constants with Redshifted Radio Absorption Lines

Strong evidence has recently emerged for a variation in the fine structure constant, α ≡ e/h̄c, over the history of the Universe. This was concluded from a detailed study of the relative positions of redshifted optical quasar absorption spectra. However, radio absorption lines at high redshift offer a much higher sensitivity to a cosmological change in α than optical lines. Furthermore, through ...
